Join a Book Club
An eight-week Greek Dancing Group Lessons series at the Greek Cultural Center with instructor Vaia Vlamis-Sparakis. It covers regional dances from Asia Minor and rebetika to Epirus, Thrace, Pontus, and the islands. $80 total, check or cash preferred, paid by the first class. Paired with Gail Holst's Road to Rembetika (1975), the pioneering English-language study of rebetiko. It follows the hashish-den music of refugees from the 1922 Asia Minor catastrophe, and the dances that carried exile, defiance, and grief into Greek popular culture.
